  21. Intermittent control or display problems that are difficult
  22. to correct with the reset procedure may be caused by a
  23. faulty ROM socket. The socket should be checked to insure
  24. that it makes good electrical contact with each pin of the
  25. ROM. If it is found to be intermittent, remove the socket
  26. and solder the ROM directly to the board. It should be
  27. noted that units between serial numbers 701XXXX to 811XXXX
  28. and from 903XXXX to 909XXXX are not likely to have this
  29. failure. In addition, units with a serial number of 909XXXX
  30. and above do not incorporate a socket.

  34.  
  35. Removing the socket requires good soldering skills. The ROM
  36. is mounted on the Digital A unit and is designated as IC2.
  37. The board, being double sided, has solder connections on
  38. both component and foil sides. When the socket is removed,
  39. it is very important to insure that each pin is completely
  40. solder free. Having to pry up on the socket means that it
  41. is not completely desoldered and will cause the circuit
  42. foils to tear.
  43.  
  44. When performing any work on the Digital A board, CMOS
  45. handling techniques must be observed. Such techniques
  46. include using a grounded or isolated soldering tip, avoid
  47. touching the pins of IC chips with your fingers, and ground
  48. yourself with a wrist ground strap.

  50. To remove the socket:

  53. 1Disconnect the power cord and antenna coax.
  54.  
  55. 2Remove the top and bottom covers from the transceiver.
  56.  
  57. 3Remove the 2 flat head screws from each side of the
  58. front panel chassis.
  59.  
  60. 4Loosen the round head screw on each side of the front
  61. panel chassis.
  62.  
  63. 5Carefully rotate the front panel forward. It will be
  64. necessary to unplug the VS-1 cable from the transceiver.
  65.  
  66. 6Remove the 4 screws from the speaker mount.
  67.  
  68. 7Carefully pull up on the mount and rotate it toward the
  69. front panel. Swing the mount toward the right side of
  70. the transceiver and allow it to rest on the Digital B
  71. unit shield.
  72.  
  73. 8Remove the 8 screws from the Digital A unit shield
  74. plate.
  75.  
  76. 9Lift the plate and rotate it to the left side of the
  77. transceiver.
  78.  
  79. 10While avoiding contact with the pins, remove the ROM
  80. (IC2) and set it aside on anti-static foam.
  81.  
  82. 11Remove the 6 screws that mount the Digital A board.
  83. Rotate the board toward the front panel to expose the
  84. bottom side of the board.
  85.  
  86. 12Carefully desolder the socket and remove it from the
  87. board. Do not pry up on the socket. If it does not
  88. easily pull off the board, the top foils are still
  89. soldered to the socket.
  90.  
  91. 13Install the ROM in the board and solder it in place.
  92.  
  93. 14Assemble the transceiver by reversing steps 1 - 11. Do
  94. not pinch the power switch cables between the front
  95. panel and the body of the transceiver.
  96. Time required for this modification is 1.5 hrs or less. (C)

  99. Note: you might find it easier to break apart the plastic of the
  100. socket and remove the pins one by one. And/Or use a better grade of
  101. socket. 
  102. Try just removing and reinserting the Rom in its socket to see
  103. if this fixes the problem before you go to all this trouble. This
  104. might clean a dirty socket contact.    Anyway....
